10 red flags

  1. They ask you to pay. Real employers never charge for applications, interviews, uniforms, training or medicals.

  2. The pay sounds too good to be true. A high salary for an easy job with no experience is a classic lure.

  3. They only communicate on WhatsApp or Telegram. Legitimate companies use proper work email and phone numbers.

  4. The email is from Gmail or Hotmail. Look for a company domain, such as name@company.co.za.

  5. You're "hired" without an interview. Real hiring takes screening.

  6. They ask for sensitive details too early. Bank PINs, passwords and OTPs should never be shared.

  7. The advert is full of spelling errors or contains vague company details.

  8. You're pressured to act fast. "Pay today or lose your spot" is a manipulation tactic.

  9. There's no verifiable company. Search the company name, website and reviews, and check whether it's registered.

  10. They want you to recruit others or buy products first. That's not a job.

What to do before applying

  • Search the company online and visit its official website.

  • Compare the advert with the careers page.

  • Call the company on a number from its official site, not the one in the advert.

  • Ask friends or family if they've heard of it.

If you've been scammed

  • Stop all contact and don't send more money.

  • Report it to the police and keep screenshots as evidence.

  • Contact your bank immediately if you shared banking details.

  • Warn others by reporting the advert on the platform where you saw it.
