Ekurhuleni West TVET College has opened applications for a Library Internship at its Tembisa Campus. It is a temporary 24-month contract, and the college states that no work experience is required. That makes it a realistic first step for Library and Information Science graduates who are finding it hard to get their first job in the field.

The minimum salary is R98,097 per year, which works out to roughly R8,175 a month. Applications close on Tuesday, 17 November 2026, and late applications are not accepted. This article explains what the role involves, who qualifies, how to apply, and what to avoid so your application is not rejected on a technicality.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC) is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training college that operates under the Department of Higher Education and Training. It has campuses in Germiston, Boksburg, Kathorus, Kempton, Tembisa and Alberton, and it regularly advertises internships and traineeships for unemployed graduates. This post is based at the Tembisa Campus.

JOB OVERVIEW

Position: Library Internship
Employer: Ekurhuleni West TVET College
Campus: Tembisa
Reference number: EWC/TEM/13/2026
Contract: Temporary, 24 months
Minimum salary: R98,097 per year
Closing date: Tuesday, 17 November 2026
Start date: As soon as possible

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As a Library Intern, you will support the day-to-day running of the campus library and resource centre. You will help provide information and library services, work the front desk of the resource centre, and handle computer bookings for students. You will also issue learning and teaching support materials and reference materials to students and lecturers.

Behind the scenes, the work includes helping with library stock taking, keeping the library organised, and doing cataloguing and classification. You will shelve books, journals, articles and newspapers every day. The college also expects interns to provide proactive information services to the entire campus, which means offering help before people have to ask for it.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you need:

- A Senior Certificate, Grade 12 or NCV Level 4 certificate.
- A recognised National Diploma or Degree (NQF 6) in Library and Information Science, Library Science, BINF, B.Bibl or a related qualification.

No work experience is required. A valid driver's licence is an added advantage, but it is not compulsory.

WHO THIS INTERNSHIP SUITS

This opportunity suits recent graduates who have the qualification but not the experience. Because the contract runs for 24 months, it gives you time to build practical skills in cataloguing, stock taking and student support, which are the skills employers usually look for in library jobs. If you already have years of library experience, this may not be the right fit, since internships are aimed at people entering the field.

WHY IT IS WORTH APPLYING

Entry-level jobs often ask for experience that graduates have not had a chance to gain. An internship like this one removes that barrier, because the college does not require prior work experience. Two years in a campus library also gives you something concrete to put on your CV. The pay is modest, but it is a steady income while you build experience, and the length of the contract gives you time to apply for permanent posts.

HOW TO APPLY

Follow these steps carefully, because small mistakes can cost you your application.

Step 1: Download and complete the new Z83 form (Application for Employment). The college warns that applications on the old Z83 will be disqualified. The new version has been in effect since 1 January 2021. You can get it from the EWC website under Apply Now, or from any Public Service Department.

Step 2: Prepare a comprehensive CV that lists three contactable references with their email addresses.

Step 3: Attach copies of your qualifications and your transcripts or academic record.

Step 4: Combine everything into one PDF file.

Step 5: Email it to EWCTEM-13-2026@ewc.edu.za, or hand deliver or courier it to Ekurhuleni West TVET College (Tembisa Campus), 09 Morogoro Street, Esiqongweni Section, Tembisa 1620.

Step 6: Mark your application with the post title and the reference number EWC/TEM/13/2026.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

Only shortlisted candidates must submit certified copies of their qualifications, academic records, driver's licence and identity document, so you do not need to certify everything upfront. Shortlisted candidates go through vetting, which includes citizenship and criminal record checks, verification of qualifications, and social media and credit checks. Make sure everything you submit is accurate.

The college says that if you do not hear from it within 90 days after the closing date, you should consider your application unsuccessful. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply, and the college reserves the right to withdraw the position at any time.

TIPS TO STRENGTHEN YOUR APPLICATION

Send a single, clearly named PDF so that nothing gets separated. Check that your Z83 is fully completed and signed before you send it. Choose referees who will actually answer their phones and emails, and warn them to expect a call. Apply a few days before the closing date rather than on the last evening, because email delays and courier problems do happen. Keep your own copy of everything you send, along with the date and time you sent it.

If you are shortlisted, have your original ID and certified copies of your qualifications ready, since the college will ask for them.
