About this role
Pikitup is hiring 150 General Workers in its Operations department. The work involves cleaning and refuse-related tasks: street and area cleaning, litter picking, stacking and loading refuse bags, emptying bins, lane flushing, carcass removal and bin deliveries. You may be assigned one or more of these tasks. The posts are at various depots, and you report to a Team Leader. The job level is Task Level 1 (A1), and the vacancy reference is 010/2026.

Must have
- Grade 10
- 12 months' proven experience in waste management as a general worker
- No criminal record
- Physically and mentally fit
- South African citizen
- Proof of residence in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality (a preference, not a strict requirement)
Nice to have
- Knowledge of waste management tools, equipment and procedures
- Knowledge of company procedures
Key responsibilities
• Attend dress parades where protective gear and equipment are inspected, and sign the attendance register
• Collect the materials and equipment needed for the day's work
• Pick litter, sweep streets and clean areas, including developed areas, informal settlements and open spaces
• Collect waste from kerbsides, streets, drop-off sites and open spaces
• Place filled refuse bags in designated areas for truck collection
• Empty bins and load refuse bags onto waste trucks or bakkies
• Clear spillage after emptying bins or when bags break
• Load new or replacement bins from central stores onto the bin delivery truck, and check for damaged bins first
• Follow safety and operational procedures, wear protective clothing and report incidents and injuries to the Team Leader and Ops Supervisor
• Complete the daily tasks and do other work assigned by the Team Leader, Supervisor or Operations Manager
